Choptank Waterfront

scroll

Cambridge, Maryland

The New England homes of their childhoods and a beloved vacation spot, the Wauwinet, a Nantucket inn, were the owners’ touchpoints in envisioning this Eastern Shore refuge. The house emphasizes horizontal continuity in exterior details and in the interior flow of spaces.

The view of the water preferred by the owners, up the river as opposed to across its broad expanse, distinguishes almost every main room in the house, and is particularly striking at the entry, looking through the house. Transoms on the waterfront side brighten the view, allowing in more light and creating a more transparent wall. Inside, bold classical arches and columns replace doorways, opening the interior space, while coffered ceiling and detailed moldings keep the rooms defined and intimate.

Truly a family-oriented home, the kitchen and great room are spacious for hosting large gatherings and comfortably sized for daily living. With an L-shaped plan, the home provides open views from all main spaces on both floors. It also provides a comfortable setting for the pool and pool terrace, integrating indoor and outdoor spaces. The design includes a gracious outdoor loggia that provides shade for sunny afternoons, a screened porch with an outdoor fireplace, and a second-floor family room with a pool table and a large outdoor deck. A covered walkway connects the house to a three-car garage with a guest suite above.
